Police are investigating how an explosive device came to be in a police station in northern Trinidad on Thursday night. Police received information and officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force went to the San Juan Police Station and searched the compound. The officers found a gas canister in the dormitory area of the station. Insp Roger Alexander and a party of officers from the Bomb Squad and other crime scene units were called out to investigate the device.

Police said the device releases a gas and is capable of creating an explosion. Senior officers said they did not know how the device came on the compound and nobody was injured. When contacted, deputy police commissioner (DCP) Mervyn Richardson said he was informed that there was a device found at the station but he has not been briefed on it.

In an unrelated incident, a police officer is now in custody after he allegedly sold a stolen vehicle from the compound of a police station in north-eastern Trinidad. Police said the officer allegedly sold a Mazda vehicle that was reported stolen and was kept impounded at the Morvant Police Station. Up to late yesterday evening, the officer was being interviewed by colleagues from the Professional Standards Bureau and other units.

When contacted, DCP Richardson said he will not comment on the issue until he was briefed.
