A Chaguanas woman, who falsely accused her ex-boyfriend of robbing and sexually assaulting her, was yesterday fined $950 for wasting police time. Naya Sinanan, of Longdenville, Chaguanas, pleaded guilty to the charge when she appeared before Magistrate Cheron Raphael in the Port-of-Spain Third Court. The maximum fine for the offence is a $1,000 fine. In default of the fine, Sinanan will serve three months in prison. According to the evidence, Sinanan made the false report to officers of the Port-of-Spain CID last Friday.

Sinanan reportedly told ASP Ajith Persad and Cpl Sheldon Narine that the night before her ex-boyfriend Glen Dickson kidnapped her at a car park on Wrightson Road in Port-of-Spain and took her to Tyrico Bay where he assaulted her at gunpoint. She also claimed that during the incident, Dickson, of Eastern Quarry, Laventille, robbed her of a cellphone and $400 cash. After taking the report, Narine conducted investigations and went in search of Dickson. Dickson later surrendered to Narine but claimed he was innocent.

Sinanan was interviewed for a second time and she provided a statement which she confessed to fabricating the story against Dickson. After pleading guilty yesterday, Sinanan told Raphael that she made up the story after he (Dickson) contacted her new companion and informed him that he (Dickson) was still romantically involved with her. Court prosecutor Sgt Caren Arthur noted that significant police resources and time were used to investigate the report which turned out to be false. She asked Raphael to impose on Sinanan a substantial fine.
