Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is what got Don Bennet killed on Thursday night. Police are working on the theory that Bennet, of Bonne Aventure, Gasparillo, was not the target of the attack. They believe that the gunman who shot Bennet, 24, while he was liming at the home of his girlfriend Michelle Cudjoe at Friendship Village, St John’s, came looking for Cudjoe’s brother, who also lives in the same house.
Reports indicate that the known suspect, who is yet to be captured, had an altercation several days before with Cudjoe’s brother and threatened to shoot him (Cudjoe). Around 9.30 pm, Bennet and Dwayne Williams were liming outside the house, when a man suddenly appeared and fired a shot, hitting Bennet. Cudjoe was not at home at the time. The shooter then trained his weapon on Williams, pulling the trigger twice, but the gun did not go off.
Williams told the police he began running from the scene and heard two gunshots as he made his escape. He said after some time elapsed, he returned to the scene to find his friend dead in a pool of blood. Police officers, including Sen Supt Cecil Santana, ASP Maynard, Cpl Mc Intosh, ASP Rampersad, Sgt Mungroo and Cpl Gupan, from the Ste Madeleine police, Task Force, Homicide and CID responded.
Less than two hours later, the officers intercepted the vehicle in which the gunman escaped, on Cipero Street, San Fernando. The female driver and other occupants of the vehicle were taken to the San Fernando police station where they were questioned. Police say they know the identity of the suspect and an arrest is imminent.
