Caimans almost dismembered the body of a middle-aged man found floating in the Bel Air River, San Fernando, yesterday. Police said the body, which was unidentified up to late yesterday, was discovered by a watchman near a La Romaine construction site where dredging works are taking place. At around 5.50 am, the watchman heard splashing sounds in the water and saw two caimans approaching an object. Taking a closer look, he realised it was the body of an East Indian man floating faced down in the water.

The watchman told a party of officers led by Snr Supt Santana, ASP Seedarie and Insp Williams that he threw stones at the reptiles before contacting the police. District medical officer Dr Assing said there were no signs of violence on the body and police suspect he may have fallen into the river while hunting crabs. They said a wedding band and other jewelry remained on the body. Officers said there was no missing persons report for anyone matching the man’s description on their database.

The victim is of dark brown complexion and was dressed in a maroon and white striped T-shirt and a red  knee-length denim pants. The body was taken to the San Fernando mortuary and police are asking anyone with information to contact the San Fernando Police Station. PC Bisnath is continuing investigations.
