Hundreds are expected to hit the streets of Port-of-Spain today in what trade unions have termed a “march for justice.” It begins at Woodford Square at 1 pm and ends at Adam Smith Square, Woodbrook. Leader of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) David Abdulah said yesterday the party had mobilised support throughout the country, including far-flung areas. “We have been mobilising and sensitising people from all areas. We were in Penal and Tobago on Tuesday, last week we went to Chaguanas and this morning (yesterday) our colleagues were at San Juan handing out flyers and telling people about the march,” Abdulah said.

Saying the response had been tremendous, he said: “People are definitely in support of this march. It is a march for justice. Wherever we went there have been a large turnout and this has been very significant. People are in support because they want proper governance.” Abdulah said a number of issues were expected to be addressed, including the e-mail investigation. He reiterated the call for an independent forensic team to be hired to probe the matter. “Given the nature of the issue and the personalities involved we don’t believe the police have the in-house capacity to deal with the matter. “This requires someone out of the fray for it to be investigated.”

He also dismissed the claim by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar that the march was politically motivated. He said it was not about the PNM but about the Workers’ Agenda and bad governance. Banking Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU) president Vincent Cabrera echoed the statement that the march was about bad governance. Cabrera said: “As far as I am concerned, it is about politics because we are reacting to a political situation. “The people need to intervene and move away from the traditional power of politics (in) which your only political involvement is to vote every five years.”
