The People’s National Movement (PNM) is calling on Attorney General Anand Ramlogan to resign.

The party said it remained unimpressed by the recognition of Ramlogan that after three weeks he had finally been convinced of the need to recuse himself from the investigations into the e-mails revealed by political leader Dr Keith Rowley. In a statement, the PNM said, “We are calling on the Attorney General to demit office which is the only way that he can recuse himself in keeping with the terms of the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act.

“It is the view of the PNM that by continuing to hold office as Attorney General while “recusing” himself from his obligations under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty is not a only violation of the Constitution and the laws of Trinidad and Tobago but also an affront to our very system of government.”

The statement said instead of demitting office, as he was required, the AG had retained the services one of the country’s eminent senior counsels and was waging a public relations battle against his accuser, Rowley, and the supposed investigator, the Integrity Commission while clinging to office.

The statement said, “While the law provides that the functions may be delegated to a public official or legal officer, the Central Authority still remains under the purview and direct guidance of the Attorney General as a matter of function and practice.
