Kavita Sieunarine, 15, looked on in horror as a gunman shot her father on Thursday night. Police said 39-year-old Sarram Sieunarine was shot dead as he walked up the steps to his home on Khadan Trace, Libertville, in Rio Claro. His killer remains anonymous as investigators said no one knew where the shot came from, but they suspect the gunman hid in the bush at the back of the house.

Reports stated that around 8 pm, Sieunarine had only just returned from the supermarket in Rio Claro with a neighbour. As he was entering his house, he was shot more than eight times. His daughter-in-law Kennisa Woods said Kavita and her mother Davey Padarath hid in the bedroom until the gunshots stopped. However, no one broke in or tried to enter the house to attack them. Relatives said they are puzzled over the killing because Sieunarine had no known enemies nor did he receive any death threats.

Woods said, “Before this thing happened, we were hearing the dogs barking at something behind the house, but at the back there is only bush. “Kavita went downstairs in the back, but she did not see anyone and as she went back into the house, same time her father came home. “He had a short conversation with his neighbour and as he walked up the steps, shots started to fire.”

Woods said Sieunarine lived a private life and was a quiet person who did not reveal much about himself. She said over the past few days, he had begun to work as a taxi driver on the San Fernando to La Romaine route after losing his job as a straightener. Woods said, “Honestly, we don't why anyone would have wanted to kill him. Right now his daughter is not coping good at all. “He has another daughter at the St Jude’s Home for Girls and she too is not coping well.”

She said it was equally hard for Padarath, who lost her mother four months ago and was hoping to celebrate her husband’s 40th birthday on Wednesday. Woods said crime was stretching to all areas of the country, as Rio Claro was usually a peaceful place where murders were rare. She said it was even more shocking that the murder took place at 8 pm, when many people were up and around the neighbourhood.
