President of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers Imran Khan says the killing of Dana Seetahal, SC, sends a frightening signal to society: No one is safe. In a telephone interview on Sunday, Khan said Seetahal’s death was a great a loss to the legal profession and the entire country. He said: “I was shocked and saddened by the news,” said Khan. Initially, he said, when his wife told him she saw on Facebook that Seetahal had been murdered, he thought it was a hoax. “It is really something out of the ordinary. It is a frightening development. “Practitioners should be more circumspect about what kinds of matters they are getting themselves in.”
He questioned whether the next target could be a member of the Judiciary. “The kind of signal this sends to society is a really frightening one. No one is safe, anyone could be a potential target,” Khan said. A subsequent press statement said: “The assembly condemns the gruesome and cold-blooded murder of Ms Seetahal, SC, in the strongest possible terms and calls upon the police and the national security personnel to take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of this horrendous crime are brought to justice in the swiftest possible time.” Expressing condolences to her family, Khan recalled that his association with Seetahal went back perhaps 17 years. He said she first taught him at Hugh Wooding Law School and he also served under her during her stint as president of the Law Association of T&T and had several interactions with her in court.
