Police are hoping the parents of nine of the 11 teenagers who ran away from the St Michael’s Home for Boys on Tuesday do the right thing and assist them in apprehending the teens.

So far, two of the escapees, accompanied by their relatives, have surrendered to the authorities. Police said they conducted a “major operation” in the hopes of apprehending the others but were unsuccessful.

When the T&T Guardian visited the home yesterday, a security guard said the management at the institution was in a meeting and unavailable to speak with the media.

The 11 who escaped were housed as remanded inmates by the court for various offences, the T&T Guardian was told. Speaking on the issue yesterday, Rev Eric Thompson of the Anglican Board, under whose supervision the institution falls, said they were “dealing with young boys with criminal minds, there is a need for increased security measures but the public should not be afraid as they are “just children” and they were not armed and dangerous.”

Some of the residents who spoke with Guardian Media at the institution yesterday said the elder boys who escaped were frequently unattended while some residents who live near the institution, located along the Diego Martin Main Road, said there have been several instances of the teens being seen wandering the area and even outside the gates unattended.
