Telecommunications provider, TSTT, is expected to explain to the Government the implications of its purchase of Massy Communications.
The purchase was announced during a TSTT news conference on Tuesday.
The Communications Workers’ Union, which represents the employees of the company, has objected to the decision. General Secretary of the union Joseph Remy said the matter was executed in secrecy.
Yesterday the issue was raised during post-Cabinet press briefing and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young and Minister of Finance Colm Imbert responded. Young said: “This is actually something that is being looked at by the Cabinet. It is something that has happened, we were (subsequently) informed of it and it is something that we are looking at.”
Asked if the Government should have had prior knowledge of the matter, Imbert said: “It depends on the nature of the decision.”
He added: “We are going to ask TSTT to explain to us exactly what are the implications of that decision so one can determine whether it is a governance matter, an operational matter, a policy matter, how it affects the Government’s policy for the continuation of TSTT in terms of an acquisition of a company, including all of the personnel that comes with the company and so on. “
Imbert said: “We are going to request details of the acquisition so we can understand what it is and then we will address the matter.”
