Relief was how students summed up their emotions yesterday as they collected their Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) results at schools in south Trinidad. ASJA Boys’ College student, Sameer Mohammed, 19, of San Fernando, speaking with the T&T Guardian after receiving his results said he was relieved and happy.

“I wrote eight units and I got ones, twos and threes. It was hard work but I had fun at the same time. I would say my success was through hard work and dedication,” Mohammed added. He said he would be attending the University of the West Indies where he intended to pursue a degree in geomantic engineering. At Presentation College, San Fernando, there was excitement among a group of friends as they received their results.

Kiral Khan, 18, of Chaguanas, and his friend Jordan Gopie, 19, of Claxton Bay, expressed joy at their success in the examinations. Khan said he was expecting to do well in four subjects. He earned five ones and three twos in his eight units. “I feel good. It was a great experience, especially at Pres. It was not too much studying. I think my friends, family and Pres teachers helped my success,” he added.

Khan said he had been accepted at the University of Waterloo, Canada, to study actuarial science. He will be leaving Trinidad later today for Canada. Gopie said he got the results for which he worked but said he could have done better. “I got six twos, a one and four. I want to take a year off. I would like to get into a foreign university or UWI to study mathematics. I had support from my friends and excellent support from my teachers and family,” he added.

Another Presentation College student, Chris Meetoo, 19, of Freeport, said he earned all ones in his eight units and hoped to attend UWI to pursue electrical engineering. Yesterday, Holy Faith Convent’s (Penal) acting principal, Norma James, said the school was overjoyed with the 2012/2013 CAPE and Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) results.

She said the school noted a 97 per cent pass rate, with 81 per cent of the girls receiving grades ones, twos and threes in CSEC, adding the school had a 96 per cent overall pass rate for CAPE. She said 80 per cent of the students got ones and twos. James said: “It makes us feel very proud of our girls. This is a school that is focused on the holistic development of the student. The academic year 2012/2013 was excellent. We want to thank God and congratulate the teachers and all members of staff.”

She said one of the students wrote eight subjects and attained eight distinctions. James said another student who wrote six CAPE subjects got six distinctions. Alim Ali, principal of ASJA Boys’ College, said the school had “fairly good results.” He said the science subjects were good but there was a decline in performance in the subjective areas:

“In both cases we had close to 90 per cent in both CAPE and CSEC. A number of students got all ones at CSEC level. We expect a number of scholarships as well.”
