A La Romaine man who was shot by police after he attacked and injured three people last Thursday was remanded into custody yesterday. A woman’s arm was broken and an elderly man ended up in hospital with a broken jaw after they were beaten with a piece of wood during the incident in La Romaine. Wilton Thomas, 27, of Hector Street, whose knees were bandaged when he appeared, pleaded guilty to four charges in the San Fernando Magistrates Court.
The charges were read to him by Second Court Magistrate Aden Stroude and Thomas elected to have the matters heard in the magistrates court. He did not have an attorney. The first charge alleged that at the corner of Claude Street and La Plaisance Street, he robbed Elizabeth Hosein of $709 and at the time used personal violence against her. Hosein, 42, was in court and her left hand was in a sling.
The other charge is that at Southern Main Road, Thomas maliciously wounded Mervyn Layne, 73. Layne is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital. Thomas is also charged with maliciously wounding Judy Francois. The fourth charge alleged that Thomas had a cutlass in his possession for the purpose of committing an indictable offence. The cutlass and piece of wood were taken to court.
Charges were laid by PC Ogunsheye and Bisnath. The facts, however, were not taken. Magistrate Stroude said the prosecution had requested time to trace him before the court heard facts and sentences. He said he was a first time offender. However, he was not granted bail and remanded into custody until tomorrow. The matter was transferred to the Fourth Court.
