Duncan Street, Port-of-Spain

Police were deployed at Duncan Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday, as rival gangs opened fire on each other. The rivalry stemmed from the granting of a Government contract to repair the Duncan Street basketball court. Senior police said around 8.30 pm, a man, 30, was liming with a group of friends outside the basketball court when he was approached by someone he knew who opened fire. The man was shot in his right arm.

He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he received emergency treatment. However, he later discharged himself and went into hiding. The alleged assailant was forced to flee the area yesterday after threats were made to burn down his house.

Since Friday night, several reports of shootings involving gangs in upper and lower Duncan Streets were made to the police. Members of the Northern Division Task Force and the Riot Squad were later deployed to keep watch in the area. Up to late yesterday, no one else was hurt. Investigations are continuing.
