A 40-year-old woman was one of two people held by police on Thursday in connection with a burglary at the home of the brother of Science and Technology Minister Rupert Griffith. When the minister’s brother Dr Reginald Griffith arrived at his home on Cumuto Main Road, Cumuto, on Tuesday afternoon, he realised it had been broken into. A window had been smashed and electronic items were missing.
Crime scene investigators checked for fingerprints. Police said more than $200,000 in items, including televisions, computers, stereos and kitchen appliances, had been stolen. Investigators led by Senior Supt David Abraham interviewed several suspects on Wednesday and eventually detained a 44-year-old Cumuto resident. The suspect later led investigators to four houses in Cumuto where all the stolen items were recovered. A 40-year-old woman, who was at one of the properties, was also detained.
Investigators said the man will be charged with housebreaking and larceny while the woman will be slapped with charges of receiving stolen goods. Police said the male suspect has several convictions and pending matters for similar offences. Both suspects are expected to appear before an Arima magistrate on Monday to answer the charges.
