A Mayaro mason died on Tuesday when the concrete deck from which he was working collapsed. A report said Jagdeo Sookraj, a 28-year-old father of three of Cedar Grove Road, Mayaro died around 9 pm while trying to prop a beam he noticed leaning. He and his wife were was in the process of renovating the family’s shelter.
Sookraj’s wife, Lisa Ramcharan, said her husband, with the help of relatives, had just completed a day’s work of casting the decking when he noticed one of the beams leaning. It was while Sookraj was trying to prop the leaning beam the entire decking collapsed and fell on him. Ramcharan said family members called the Mayaro Health Centre for an ambulance but was told one could be dispatched only if it was an emergency.
Ramcharan said her husband started to scream for help and was pulled out by relatives and taken by car to the centre but was pronounced dead on arrival. Sookraj was the sole bread winner of the household.
