Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Khadijah Ameen, the UNC’s Chaguanas West candidate, were given a warm welcome when the duo, a barrage of government ministers and party supporters walked through the streets of Felicity yesterday. Persad-Bissessar and Ameen met at the Shri Krishen Mandir at Lyle Lane Street. Persad-Bissessar greeted the supporters and advised them of the short campaign that will culminate with a by-election on July 29.

“We go brave today. I thank you, the supporters, for coming out in your strength.” Persad-Bissessar told reporters the feedback the party has been getting is that Ameen would take home the seat for the UNC. She said Ameen was a good campaigner who will represent women and youth in the party.

Ask Mr Warner what are his steps—Persad-Bissessar
When asked about the status of former MP Jack Warner, the PM said Warner remains a member of the UNC. “You may want to ask Mr Warner what are his steps at this time.” Ameen said she was pleased to be among the “good people” of Felicity. Ameen said she comes into the election with experience as a corporation chairman responsible for 11 constituencies, extending from Blanchisseuse to Monroe Road, Cunupia.

Ameen said Chaguanas West has suffered a lot of neglect over several administrations. She said the national development thrust for the constituency must continue, and the residents must take part in a participatory democracy to determine how projects are undertaken and in what time frame it should happen. Ameen said she has had reports of thuggery, and she would not support any sort of thuggery and mudslinging with anyone. Ameen said she wants Warner to work with her.

“I hope he could join me at some point in support if he doesn’t have any bad feelings.” The walk proceeded south from the temple with the PM sharing calendars and cups from the back of a truck. Persad-Bissessar later got off the truck to meet the residents.
