Former national security minister Jack Warner will now have to contemplate whether to run as an independent in the July 29 Chaguanas West by-election, after it was announced last night that Khadijah Ameen, as expected, would be the UNC candidate. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar gave Ameen her vote last night during a political meeting in Endeavour, Chaguanas.

Telling the large crowd that the UNC “had to decide who was best to meet all our requirements,” the PM said, “It always comes down to making choices; in every constituency we can only have one candidate. And having considered all the factors we made a choice and tonight I am asking you to embrace your candidate and elect that candidate.” She then announced Ameen as the party’s choice.

The PM also urged supporters to ensure they keep the Opposition PNM out of Chaguanas West by voting for the rising sun. Ameen, who is the current chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and also acting chairman of the UNC, will come up against the PNM’s Avanish Singh, a 24-year-old farmer.
