Two men were murdered in separate shooting incidents in Laventille and Arouca between Tuesday afternoon and early yesterday morning. In the latest incident, 30-year-old Kadar Weston, of Upper Laventille Road, Laventille, was shot in a drive-by shooting at a bar near his home. According to police reports, around 12.45 am, Weston was standing on the sidewalk near the bar at Snake Valley, Laventille, when a white car with three people inside pulled alongside him.

Patrons at the bar told investigators they heard gunshots and then saw the car speeding away. Weston was found lying on the ground with several gunshot wounds to the chest. Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) responded and took Weston to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after. Investigators said Weston was not known to police. In the earlier incident on Tuesday afternoon, Anthony Brown was shot dead near his home at Building Six, Maloney Gardens, Arouca.

Police said around 3.45 pm, residents of Brown’s building reported hearing several gunshots. When they checked the courtyard they saw an armed man chasing Brown. Eyewitnesses told police after a short chase, Brown tripped and fell. The gunman stood over him, shot him once in the head and ran off. Investigators said eyewitnesses were able to give a detailed description of the gunman because he did not hide his face. An arrest is imminent.

Police are working on the theory that Brown’s murder might be related to another in Maloney on Monday evening. In that incident, Joel Collins, a 27-year-old painter from Maloney, was shot dead at a job site in a neighbouring community. The murder toll stood at 183 up to yesterday evening. Investigations are continuing.
