The driver of a truck believed to be responsible for Saturday’s hit-and-run accident which killed two people has been held, but relatives said it does little to ease their pain. On Sunday, Central Division Task Force got a tip-off that the truck was parked in the Preysal Cemetery, near the suspect’s home. The truck was damaged to the front and wires were holding up loose fittings. The driver was arrested at his home and police said he drove off in fear.

He was being questioned by CID at the Freeport Police Station yesterday, and was yet to be charged. Police said he should appear in court by Friday. On Saturday, Krishendath Ramdeen, 60, his son Ramdath Ramdeen, 31, both of St Julien’s Village, Princes Town were travelling in a vehicle with Sham Mohammed 50, of Mayaro, Terrance Forbes, 28 and Nazar Nazmodeen, 28.

Around 2.30 am, near the Freeport interchange, a truck rammed the Nissan AD wagon, driven by Ramdath, from behind causing the vehicle to crash into a utility pole before plunging into a ditch off the Solomon Hochoy Highway. Police said the truck never stopped. Krishendath Ramdeen and Sham Mohammed died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Ramdeen’s son Sheldon Ramdeen said while his family is thankful to police, it’s hard to say goodbye to their father, who will be cremated around noon today at the Shore of Peace, Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche. “It is a little ease, but we still have to deal with the death of our father. We still have a funeral to see about and it is real hard. There are still fellas from the accident who are still in the hospital,” Sheldon said.
