Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a security guard who was shot dead during a midday robbery in Port-of-Spain last month. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested at his Laventille home yesterday morning during a police exercise in the area. He was handed over to homicide detectives and remained under interrogation in custody up to late yesterday evening. The suspect was wanted in connection with the murder of 41-year-old security guard John Adams.
On May 26, Adams was working at Aboutique Mall, Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, when he tried to stop two armed bandits who had just robbed a jewelry store in the mall. While struggling with one of the robbers, Adams was shot several times in the chest. The robbers then ran away. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras located inside and outside the building. The footage assisted police in identifying the suspect, investigators said. The suspect, who is well known to police, is expected to be placed on several identification parades before he is charged with Adams’ murder.
Yesterday’s exercise was conducted by police from the Besson Street CID and Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). Meanwhile, two men were caught red-handed burgling a Port-of-Spain mall early yesterday morning. According to reports, at around 4 am, police from the Port-of-Spain CID were on patrol along Henry Street in Port-of-Spain when they saw broken glass door at Plaza Espermaria. They went in and found two men trying to get into an electronics store. The police identified themselves and the thieves surrendered. Three other stores had been burgled. The men, aged 18 and 21, both of Morvant, are assisting investigators. PC Phillip and WPC Phillip-David are continuing investigations.
