The parents of two young children have been granted $200,000 bail for allegedly abandoning them in a car at PriceSmart, La Romaine. Kerry Wells, 24, a pipefitter, and Aveon George, 23, who is unemployed, were arrested and charged on Sunday by WPC Hassanali. They were subsequently granted bail by a justice of the peace at the San Fernando Police Station.
The San Fernando couple appeared before San Fernando Fourth Court Magistrate Natalie Diop yesterday on two charges of child abandonment. It is alleged that the couple left the children—two girls, aged three and five—in the car alone and thus wilfully neglected and abandoned them “in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering and/or injury” to the children.
The charges were laid under Section 3 (1) of the Children Act. The parents were not called upon to plead. Their attorney Shaun Teekasingh said the couple had already been granted bail at the station. The magistrate transferred the case to the First Court for Friday.
