Opposition leader Dr Keith Rowley has issued a $12,000 cheque to Gerald Ramdeen, attorney representing Attorney General Anand Ramlogan for monies owed.

The cheque, dated June 6, issued by Rowley’s attorney and PRO of the People’s National Movement Faris Al-Rawi is final settlement of cost ordered by Justice Andre des Vignes arising out of a defamation claim against Rowley for statements that he made on November 1, 2011.

Rowley alleged that 50 per cent of State briefs were awarded by Ramlogan to his former law firm Freedom House Law Chambers.

The payment comes three weeks after Rowley denied owing any money to the AG, a statement from his lawyer stated.

Ramlogan had filed proceedings in the High Court seeking to declare the PNM leader bankrupt. Under the Representation of the People Act, it is an automatic disqualification to be a MP and to be bankrupt. Now that Rowley has paid up, the bankruptcy proceedings will come to an end.

Rowley also owes Ramlogan sums arising out of another application.

This claim arises out of statements made by Rowley in relation to the judgment of Justice Boodoosingh in the judicial review proceedings against Steve Ferguson and Ish Galbaransingh.

The sum to be paid by Rowley in this matter is yet to be quantified by the court.
