Hillview College excelled in this year’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (Cape) examinations by gaining 18 open scholarships and 23 additional scholarships. Education Minister Tim Gopeesingh yesterday announced the distribution of scholarships and revealed that the number of scholarships awarded had increased from just over 300 in 2009 to 452 this year. The minister repeated remarks that this year showed the best academic performance thus far for T&T’s students in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exam (Cape) as well as other examinations. He said students were performing better and better.
Gopeesingh added that between 2010 and 2014, the Government had awarded 1,930 scholarships to students. Despite his remarks, there was a decrease in the number of schools receiving scholarships from last year’s 40 schools to 36 this year. The same number of government schools received scholarships as compared to last year. Gopeesingh said approximately, 4,000 students wrote Cape, meaning almost 11 per cent or one out of nine students received scholarships. “In keeping with PP thrust in education, we have tried to ensure that we move in the areas of science technology, engineering, arts and mathematics and we are working with tertiary level institutions to increase research being done on a national level,” said Gopeesingh.
