The appearance of four police officers in court on criminal charges was delayed yesterday after one of them fell ill. The four police officers—an acting sergeant, an acting corporal and two police constables—all of east Trinidad were due to appear in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates Court yesterday on charges of misbehaviour in public office. They are accused of stealing $655,000 from a Chinese couple last week.
The accused was taken to hospital for treatment and was back at the station yesterday evening. Police also had to conduct another identification parade for one of the officers. Police sources said the officers were expected to be granted bail by a Justice of the Peace last night, which would allow them to return home before returning to court this morning. It is alleged that last Wednesday, the police officers went to the apartment of Danny and Yvonne Owu’s Bon Air Gardens, Arouca, and carried out a search.
The couple, who were not at home, were contacted by a resident of the building after the men were seen leaving with loaded duffel bags. A report was made to police who traced the SUV’s licence plate number to the Arouca station.
