Radio i95.5 turns down CAL tickets

Radio host Tony Lee has refused the two airline tickets sponsored by Caribbean Airlines Ltd (CAL) so his station can cover the 2013 World Athletic Championship in Russia. His decision follows comments made by CAL chairman Rabindra Moonan on the issue of 19 complimentary tickets given to vice-chairman Mohan Jaikaran for a Mother’s Day concert held in New York and Toronto last week.

In response to a T&T Guardian exclusive reported on May 8, Moonan said CAL approved the tickets in line with its normal sponsorship programme. Moonan said the company usually has several such requests, noted that it often sponsored national teams and also referred to the two tickets recently approved for i95.5 reporters for travel to London for the IAAF event. Lee, however, took objection to the comments and publicly refused the tickets that were approved for sports commentator Andre Baptiste and himself.

He noted that the company was giving advertising in exchange for the tickets, which were only taking them as far as London. Lee said then he was subsequently asked to reconsider his position by Moonan. On Tuesday, however, Lee sent a letter to the acting CAL CEO Robert Corbie informing him of the decision to refuse the tickets. Lee described Moonan’s comments as “unfair” and “unwarranted.”

The letter stated: “Our proposal clearly stated the benefits to CAL and was submitted on April 19, 2013, for travel in August four months ahead of our scheduled travel to London. “During our Morning Show on I95.5FM, Thursday 9th May 2013 (between 8.35 and 9.00 am), I made it abundantly clear “Live and On Air” that I vehemently objected to the linking of I95’s proposal to that of Mr Jaikaran’s request.

After due consideration I now advise that I would not accept the offer of the two tickets.” Attempts to contact Moonan for comments yesterday were unsuccessful as telephone calls went directly to his voice mail. Sources told T&T Guardian that board members were still in a meeting which was expected to run until late evening.

Meanwhile, a report on the 19 airline tickets is expected to be submitted to Cabinet today by Finance Minister Larry Howai. Howai had requested additional information in the report submitted.
