Already in trouble for drunk driving, a Penal schoolteacher was arrested yesterday for trying to bribe a San Fernando police officer. The 45-year-old man from Penal Rock Road was among 53 people who were arrested during special anti-crime exercises that took place between 6 am Friday and 6 am yesterday.

Police said the man was returning home when he was stopped in the exercise led by Cpl Barran and PC Sookhai. After failing two breathalyser tests, the man offered Sookhai $500, asking him to forget the charge. Sookhai refused and arrested the man not only for driving over the prescribed limit for alcohol consumption, but for attempting to bribe a police officer. Officers checked the man’s records and found that it was his second DUI offence.

Three women were also arrested and charged, including a 28-year-old babysitter of Claxton Bay and a 32-year-old chef of Bamboo Village, La Romaine. A 20-year-old store manager of Siparia was held for driving without a driver’s permit. In addition, 54 traffic tickets were given out in 286 stops and searches. Thirty-three others were arrested on outstanding warrants for drug possession, robbery, larceny and other offences.
