A Forestry Division foreman who got so drunk that he wandered aimlessly into someone’s premises where he received a sound beating yesterday was put on a $5,000 bond for 12 months.
Paul Francis, of Las Lomas, also was advised by Chaguanas Magistrate Rae Roopchand to join Alcoholics Anonymous.
Francis, who had bandages on both legs, had to be assisted by a friend as he limped into the First Court.
He pleaded guilty to being found in enclosed premises on Saturday.
Police prosecutor Sgt Shiva Boodoo said around 4.15 am the police received a report and went to a woman’s house at Madras Road, St Helena.
After speaking with the woman, the police searched her premises. They saw Francis trying to jump over a fence to escape. He was arrested and charged.
When asked why he was limping, Francis said he was beaten by the people living in the house.
The magistrate said people must protect themselves.
“Citizens have the right to protect themselves and their property if there is a threat and use reasonable force to do so,” her added.
Francis apologised for his action and even shook the hands of the owners of the premises.
He said he was drinking at a bar in the area.
“I was drunk. I did not know myself,” he said, insisting he was not a thief.
A man who described Francis as his brother and friend said since Francis wife passed away he has been drinking.
He said Francis promised him he would stop drinking.
The magistrate explained to him he had to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for the duration for the bond, otherwise he would be brought back to court for sentencing.
