Phillip Noreiga, 31, was on his way home, yesterday, after working all morning in his vegetable garden in Paria, when he was gunned down. He lived alone but was one of 14 children. The shooting occurred at about 11.30 am at Brasso Seco, Paria, but the district medical officer arrived at about 5 pm. Speaking with the T&T Guardian yesterday, Noreiga’s sister, Carol Lewis, said police at the Blanchisseuse station said they could not make it to the scene earlier because there was only one vehicle assigned to the station.
That vehicle was reportedly being used by police on an inquiry into the death of a young person on Sunday evening. Noreiga was before an Arima magistrate on a shooting charge and Lewis believes her brother might have been killed over that matter. "I strongly believe it has something to do with that shooting which took place in the same area where he lived," she said.
She described her brother as a quiet person. "He was the type of person who did not talk much but always had a smile on his face,” she added. Blanchisseuse police are investigating.
