Two men appeared before a Sangre Grande magistrate yesterday charged with murdering 62-year-old former school teacher and gardener John Ramoutar. The men—Arnold Ashton 19 and Lionel Clement, 22, both of Nariva Road, Manzanilla— were represented by defence attorney Fareed Ali when they stood before Ejenny Espinet in the Sangre Grande First Court.

They were arrested at their homes on July 25 by members of the Northern Division Task Force. Instructions to charge the duo came on Wednesday from acting Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Joan Honore-Paul. The men would re-appear on August 28.

Ramoutar went missing last week Tuesday after he left his Eastern Main Road, Manzanilla, home to tend to his crops a short distance away. He was found dead in a forested area in Manzanilla three days later. An autopsy said he died from a broken neck when his spinal cord was severed after receiving a blow to the face.
