Education activist Malala Yousafzai performed her Eid-Ul-Fitr salat (prayers) at the Masjid Un Nur in Carapichiama yesterday morning. Many of the people at the mosque located on Waterloo Road were unaware that the world famous education activist was there.

Malala arrived shortly before 8 am under heavy police guard and was hurriedly escorted to the upper level of the mosque where women gathered for prayer.

Before she left in a white Toyota Prado she met some members of the Islamic community gathered at the back of the mosque. Greetings were given on her behalf by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who said his family was excited to celebrate Eid in T&T.

“You are a great country. We see good harmony between all of the people of this country and we see good institutions and the love which we have received from you we will not forget,” he said.

Senator Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education, who accompanied the delegation, extended Eid greetings on behalf of Malala’s family.

Malala is visiting T&T this week under the auspices of The University of T&T, which is hosting a gala event, An Evening with Malala, tomorrow, at the Lord Kitchener Auditorium of the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port-of-Spain.
