Fourth acting stint for Williams

Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams is likely to get a fourth extension of his contract from the Police Service Commission (PSC) later this week. But the Police Service Social and Welfare Association is calling on the commission do much more to appoint a permanent commissioner. Williams’s current six-month tenure is due to expire on July 31. A spokesman close to the commission said members were reviewing the necessary documents and were expected to meet at its office at the corner of Churchill-Roosevelt Highway and Pasea Main Road on Thursday. As part of the review process the achievements and challenges of the Police Service were expected to be taken into consideration, the spokesman said. Williams got his third extension in January. At a press briefing commission chairman Prof Ramesh Deosaran had criticised Williams for his tardiness in submitting reports in a timely manner but said then it was likely the country would have an acting commissioner for “a very long time” because a firm was yet to be contracted again to screen candidates for the position. Williams was appointed to act on August 7, 2012 to replace former Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs, who resigned, along with former Deputy Commissioner Jack Ewatski. Both Gibbs and Ewatski returned to Canada. Contacted yesterday, Williams confirmed he was meeting with the commission on Thursday and said he intended to meet the association to clarify issues of promotion.
