Second autopsy points to head wound
Published:
Saturday, June 28, 2014

An independent autopsy on the body of Jahwi Ghany, 31, yesterday showed he died from blunt force trauma to the head. This second autopsy, which was organised by Ghany’s relatives, contradicted Thursday’s autopsy, which was done at the Forensic Science Centre in St James by forensic pathologist Dr Eastlyn McDonald-Burris. That autopsy reported that Ghany died from heart failure.

However, the second autopsy by Dr Hubert Daisley was prompted by relatives after they saw a photograph with him lying motionless face-up on a thin foam mattress, wearing only a pair of boxers. His head tilted to the left side with what looked like froth coming from the mouth. The image was allegedly taken by a police officer while he was in a holding cell at an undisclosed police station in the Central Division after Ghany was discovered unconscious.

The second autopsy also reported that Ghany had choked on his own vomit. The photograph also showed a blue-black coloured area just below the left arm. It was reported that Ghany, of Walker Trace, Freeport died while in police custody on Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at the Chaguanas Health Facility about two hours after being arrested for possession of a small quantity of marijuana.

Ghany was at his home on Tuesday up until 2 pm doing mechanical work on a vehicle, then left with another man to go and buy an engine seal at Bank Village, Carapichaima. It is alleged he went to purchase a “small smoke” when he was stopped by Central Division Task Force police and subsequently arrested. Relatives are seeking legal advice as to their next course of action.
