Every night since witnessing the murder of Sherlene Charles her family has been reliving the horror. Yesterday was a month since the mother of four was shot three times by her estranged lover, who up until yesterday had still managed to elude police. While the 36-year-old Claxton Bay man roams free, Charles’ 17-year-old daughter, Kimberly Mahangoo, who was also shot three times during the attack at their home at Stoney Hill Avenue, Tarodale, remains at hospital.
Adding to their fears, neighbours have reported seeing the suspect around the family’s home and they suspect he was seeking further vengeance after Charles ended their relationship last December. “Yes, everybody is still afraid. We are still frightened. We have a fear in us. Sometime in the night we don’t really sleep because we can never put our guard down,” a relative said. Up until yesterday, police maintained the search for the suspect was still on.
On May 4, Charles, 37, a kitchen assistant at the Royal Hotel, San Fernando, reported to Mon Repos police the suspect had threatened to kill her and while at the station, he showed up and agreed to leave her alone. However, as she returned home from work around 10 pm that night, she was ambushed and severely chopped by the suspect.
Despite searches by police, he continued calling her phone, making death threats until May 10 when he broke a glass window and entered her house while she and her sisters, Kimberly and nine-year-old son Naim were “liming”. Charles was shot three times by the man who then walked into Kimberly’s room and shot her three times. A relative said Kimberly’s health was improving but said the Ste Madeleine Secondary School student had missed out on a lot of school work. The relative said Naim was staying with his father’s relatives.
“When they night comes, we are still a bit frightened. Yesterday made it a month since she died and nothing has come out of this case yet. It has been a month already and you all (police) know who the person is and you all can’t catch this man. “All we need is justice, that is all we want, nothing else. This man cannot just murder her, shoot her daughter and get away with it, that is nonsense. There are people who haven’t done worse but are being caught. This is nonsense now,” the relative added.
