Founder of the Independent Liberal Party, Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner is not seeking re-election as political leader of the one-year-old party. Warner is proposing that one of his deputy political leaders, former Senate vice president Lyndira Oudit be elected as the party’s first female leader. Warner is seeking election as the chairman. He made the disclosures at an address to the party’s Nomination Day exercise at the ILP headquarters on Edward Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.

The ILP will elect a new executive to lead the party into next year’s general election. Warner said after reflection and introspection it was time the party made some changes to improve its chances in the 2015 general election. He said if the slate was supported by the party’s membership in the June 29 national executive elections, “it will be another landmark decision on the road to government in 2015.”

The ILP was formed last year after Warner resigned from the People’s Partnership Government. He won the Chaguanas West seat under the ILP banner.

Other positions

Officers on Warner’s slate are:
• Deputy political leaders—Rekha Ramjit (attorney-at-law), Dr Lena Brereton, Joseph Mendes, businessman.
• Vice chairman—Rosanna Sookdeo (Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation)
• Education and Training Officer—Amarnath Jaggasar (teacher)
• Elections Officer—Ricardo Lee Sing
