The killing of this country’s young citizens continues as three teenagers have now lost their lives in less than three days, pushing the murder toll to 188 for the year. The corresponding murder toll for the same period last year was 164 The latest teenaged victim was Shakam De Revenaux, 19, whose body was found on Monday evening in a drain along the Lady Young Road, Morvant. He was wrapped in a bedsheet and his head covered with a plastic bag.

Police were called to the site just before 7 pm after residents saw the badly beaten body in the drain. Speaking with the media yesterday outside the Forensic Science Centre, St James, De Revenaux’s mother, Rosemarie Garraway, said her son was not known to be involved in any criminal activity. Unfortunately, she added, that may have triggered his killing. She said the teen, whose birthday was last month, was pursuing his dream of becoming an engineer.

Garraway said Shakam, her eldest child, was last seen alive on Sunday when he left home to attend the wake of a neighbour at Stephensville, Mapp Lands, Laventille. “He was murdered for what I don’t know... what reason. I don’t know my son to be involved in any negative thing. It is not me but the entire community hurt by it. “When I found out that my son had died was by the screams of the neighbours.” She added that the last thing the two had discussed was food as he loved soup.

A relative said De Revenaux received a call while at the wake and he left. This was the last time he was seen alive. Garraway was then suddenly stopped by her former husband, Dexter De Revenaux, from speaking further with the media. Police believe De Revenaux may have been killed over a woman. His autopsy report said he had been beaten about the head and body.

Other murdered teens

The other murdered youths are Jamal Brathwaite, 15, who was shot dead at his Morvant home on Sunday along with his nine-year-old brother, Jadel Holder, and 17-year-old Michael Miguel, who was shot dead on Monday morning after a brawl a bar in Claxton Bay.
