The bar associations of Jamaica and Grenada have joined in condemning the murder of prominent prosecutor Dana Seetahal. The Jamaican Bar Association says it hopes the authorities will be relentless in bringing the killers to justice. The association said Seetahal’s death was an unfortunate reminder that all stakeholders must take very seriously all threats and related acts of violence against the judiciary and attorneys.
A statement from Grenada Bar Association condemned the brutal and senseless killing of Seetahal, a highly and widely respected senior attorney, former president of the Law Association, former independent senator, veteran newspaper columnist, well-respected lecturer and tutor and distinguished author. It said: “Seetahal’s killing weighs heavily, not only on the people of T&T but also on the wider Caribbean.
“She groomed hundreds of lawyers throughout the region, including several Grenadian attorneys, with her well-prepared lectures and lively tutorials at the Hugh Wooding Law School, particularly in the area of criminal law and procedure. “Focused, disciplined, thorough and intellectually sharp, she possessed a unique ability to command the attention and respect of her students.
“She ranked among the experts in the region in the field of criminal practice and procedure. Her expertise shone, not only in the classroom and courtroom, but also as the distinguished author of the 2001 publication Commonwealth Caribbean Criminal Practice and Procedure, the first book of its kind in the Commonwealth Caribbean on criminal procedure.” The association urged authorities to leave no stone unturned to ensure her killers were brought to justice.
