Scores of Tobagonians lined the entrance of the ANR Robinson International Airport last evening to get a glimpse of the casket bearing the body of Tobago icon, former president, prime minister and THA chairman Arthur NR Robinson. The body arrived in Tobago at 5.43 pm escorted by two National Security helicopters and was greeted by salutes from members of the T&T Regiment and Police Service.
THA Chief Secretary Orville London was also on hand to welcome the body. Eager adults and children alike said they went to the airport to be a part of history. One man, who gave his name as Lennox, said he travelled from Les Coteaux to be part of the occasion and was satisfied with his experience "I am satisfied with what I saw. It's the first time I experienced this and it is fitting for a man who has done this country very proud. He was truly God-sent and I am glad he is home now," he said.
Rucil Percy, from Crown Point, told the T&T Guardian Tobago residents could now breathe a sigh of relief that Robinson would be laid to rest on home soil. "Mr Robinson did wonderful and great things for Tobago and we can give up now, it is time for him to go, but at the same time I am wondering which politician today can stand and continue in his footsteps," she said.
The entourage left the airport at 6.03 pm. Tobagonians will get the opportunity to view the casket today at the THA Legislature, Jerningham Street, Scarborough, from 6 am to 6 pm.
