Robinson’s daughter Ann Margaret, son David and granddaughter Anushka looked sombre during the funeral. Among the regional leaders who attended were Guyana President Donald Ramoutar, Grenada Governor General Dr Cecile La Grenade, Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Antigua/Barbuda Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer. Notably absent from the service were former prime ministers Basdeo Panday and Patrick Manning. None of Robinson’s cabinet ministers were seen at the service. One former National Alliance for Reconstruction minister said she received no invitation and so did not attend. Chief celebrant Reverend Dr Lesley G Anderson, of the Methodist Church, said the country was grateful to God for Robinson’s life and service. He said Robinson was a very outstanding individual who “served his country with great distinction.”
The funeral service began shortly before the scheduled 9.30 start. The auditorium was not packed to capacity. Master of ceremonies, Wendell Constantine, had to announce the arrival of President Carmona on more than one occasion before he entered. When the first announcement was made at 9.15, it was Persad-Bissessar who entered. The crowd had to stand a second time a minute later for the President’s arrival. And later during the service, Robinson’s granddaughter, Anushka, was called to read Psalm 91, but there was no bible among the congregation. After a few moments she proceeded to recite it from her head, which she did without error. Robinson’s body was brought into NAPA earlier in a draped casket and a final procession in the city.
