The Ministry of the People and Social Development is functioning as efficiently as before following the dismissal last month of former minister Glenn Ramadharsingh. Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin said so yesterday at a press conference held to deliver hampers to the mother of the first twins delivered in this country this year, Aarti Nagessar— and the parents of the first triplets delivered in the country, Chantal Grant and Arif Ali.
Both families live in California, central Trinidad.Assistance, in the form of furniture and appliances, were also given to the Ramdass family who lost their home in a fire in Barrackpore on Saturday. In an interview following the press conference, Alleyne-Toppin told the media following Ramadharsingh’s removal, the ministry was running smoothly. He was removed from his post last month following allegations of inappropriate behaviour involving a Caribbean Airlines flight attendant. “We have such a wonderful staff here, we are delivering with equity and we have an amplified delivery. “I take care of the day-to-day operations and we have great leadership from the Prime Minister,” Alleyne-Toppin added.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar took charge of the ministry following Ramadharsingh’s removal. Chief Technical Officer at the ministry, Vijay Ganga Persad, said the ministry would continue to pursue its agenda to ensure that the people of T&T got the necessary services. He said over the past month, the ministry had distributed over 1,500 grants, 400 of which were house repair grants. He said the ministry also had distributed over 400 food cards.
