A new Independent Senator has been appointed to fill the vacancy left by the sudden resignation of Subhas Ramkhelawan in the Senate. President Anthony Carmona announced the appointment of Reverend Joy Evelyn Abdul-Mohan yesterday in a media statement. Ramkhelawan, the former co-ordinator of the Independent bench, announced his resignation on Thursday, in the face of a criminal investigation into the controversial First Citizens IPO (initial public offering) share sale.

He also stepped down as chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange. Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said last week the share issue was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Commissioner of Police and the Securities Exchange Commission for investigation. Parliamentary sources said yesterday that Senator Helen Drayton was expected to assume the role of co-ordinator of the Independent benches.

On today’s agenda, in the Senate, legislators are also expected to debate Nurses and Midwives Registration Act, which will be presented by health Minister Dr Fuad Khan. The Environment and Water Resources Minister Ganga Singh is expected to answer a question from Opposition Senator Camille Robinson-Regis about an investigation into allegations of bid-rigging, in respect of Contract WTC 197/2011 issued by WASA, in the sum of approximately $70 m dollars. She also wants Singh to give the status of this investigation, if indeed, one is on-going and to confirm whether this allegation of bid-rigging, or any related conduct, was reported to either the Auditor General, the Integrity Commission or to the Police. The sitting begins at 10 am.
