Three men and three women who were arrested in Hindustan after the burnt remains of Freeport kidnap victim Devindar Siewdass were found have been released on bail. Police said that the suspects appeared at the Princes Town Magistrates Court for possession of marijuana last week and had their matter adjourned. But inquiries into Siewdass’ murder and kidnapping are moving ahead.
Members of the Anti Kidnapping Squad, Southern Homicide Bureau, Southern Division CID and the Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit found Siewdass’s remains among a pile of tyres some 300 feet behind the house where the suspects were held. While searching the house, police also found a quantity of marijuana. Two Central Division police constables, one of whom is the son of a police inspector, and a Chaguanas businessman were also questioned and subsequently released.
Police also found a pair of sunglasses, a bloody mattress and a cutlass at another house in Hindustan where one of the suspects was seen. DNA from the burnt remains was sent to the United Kingdom for analysis last month and on Friday investigators received confirmation that the remains were indeed Siewdass’. On Sunday, Siewdass was cremated at the Waterloo cremation site after a funeral at his Rudy Avenue home. Relatives said they did not want any media coverage.
Around 6 pm, March 22, Siewdass, who worked as a courier at DHL Services at Piarco, left home in his black Mitsubishi Libero station wagon. His family were unaware of where he went and around 9 pm when his father called his phone, someone else answered and said if he wanted to see his son alive again, he must pay a ransom of $2 million. A report was made to the AKU, CGIU and Freeport police, who found Siewdass’s car abandoned at Forres Park.
The car was impounded and taken for fingerprint tests. Siewdass’s remains were found a day later at Matiste Road, Hindustan.
