Private for hire (PH) operators are seeking a meeting with Transport Minister Stephen Cadiz to discuss the future of the trade. President of the Auxillary Transport Association (ATA) Fitzdavid Samuel said so in a brief interview with the T&T Guardian yesterday in the wake of the minister’s claim that the PH trade was “getting totally out of hand” and he had to stop it. The PH trade is illegal. But Samuel said the drivers were providing a valuable service to commuters across the country. He said there was need for consultations on the matter.

He said any move to stop the PH taxis will cause “a serious repercussion for the travelling public, so we want to meet with him to resolve the matter.” Samuel said the group will present its 15-point plan to regularise the PH taxis, which was presented to former Works and Transport minister Jack Warner in 2011. He is suggesting the need to amend the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act to ensure that insurance was provided for commuters.

When the issue was raised two years ago no insurance company was interested in providing insurance coverage for commuters. “Once these acts are amended the PH operators will be able to obtain insurance coverage for passengers. Michael Eastman, vice president and PRO of the association, said any moves to stop PH operators would not be in the best interest of the national community.

He said stopping PH operators would create additional problems as many people in rural districts depend on the service. “trying to stop it may create more problems than it has right now,” Eastman added.
