Arima police are investigating the drowning of a 41-year-old woman, who they believed suffered an epileptic seizure and collapsed in a bucket of water at her home. Police said around 10.30 pm on Thursday 49-year-old Simon Pickerin, who also suffers from epilepsy, was at Ideal Hardware on Cocorite Road, Arima, when he asked Lystra Charles for a bucket of water. Pickerin told police after some time he got tired of waiting, went to see what was the hold-up and called out to Charles.

He got no response, so he and a neighbour went into Charles’ house and found her in her bathroom with her head in a bucket of water and her body sprawled on the floor. The neighbour, a fireman, telephoned the emergency health services but they were unable to revive her. Police have so far ruled out foul play but are still investigating.

In an unrelated matter a Maracas St Joseph mother of three is now homeless after her house was destroyed by fire on Thursday afternoon.

Around 3 pm Amoy St Clair, of Castillo Trace, Maracas St Joseph, went to a nearby river to wash clothes. While there she was alerted that her house was on fire. Fire officers from the Tunapuna Fire Station responded but were unable to save the house. (JLV)
