PNM supporters are expected to assemble outside Parliament this afternoon to protest the Government’s award of a $1.6 billion contract to construct the Beetham Waste Water Treatment Plant, being managed by the National Gas Company (NGC) on behalf of WASA. Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley issued the call at a party meeting in Bon Air on Tuesday. He said PNM supporters, wearing their red party jerseys should hold hands in a line around Tower D, Waterfront Complex, Wrightson Road, as he presents a private motion.
His motion reads in part: “Be it resolved that this House take note of these developments and call upon the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to immediately stop this award and review the overall circumstances to ensure the public interest is protected and state resources are not stolen or wasted in the said project.” Also in the House, Finance and the Economy Minister Larry Howai is expected to tell legislators whether an overdraft facility had been established for Caribbean Airlines with First Citizens Bank. Opposition MP Alicia Hospedales is also asking the minister to say when the facility was established and the name of the officer who was authorised to sign on behalf of CAL. The sitting starts at 1.30 pm.
