Several young adult missionaries are to journey to the Caribbean countries of St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines over the Easter vacation to assist in the rehabilitation process for those who were affected by the Christmas Eve floods. A release from the Catholic Youth Commission (CYC) yesterday stated that the missionaries would spend five days on their mission. This follows a drive to collect relief packages for children affected by the Christmas Eve storm disaster which hit both countries.

The appeal for hygiene packs and stationery was answered by dozens of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. Although the initial request for items for the hygiene packs included toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, soap and a wash rag, many packs also contained bath gel, body lotion, lip gloss, hairbrushes and other accessories, the release said. Some of the schools answering the call were: Morne Diablo RC; Paramin RC; Tunapuna Girls RC; St Joseph Girls RC; Coryal RC; Upper Guaico RC; Carapo RC; San Fernando Boys’ RC; St Gabriel Girls’ RC; Sacred Girls’ RC; St Dominic RC and Mundo Nuevo RC.

The packages were shipped to both countries earlier this month. Commenting on the success of the appeal CYC operations co-ordinator Charmaine Betaudier said the response was “overwhelming.” She added the CYC was grateful to all the groups which have jumped on board to provide hope and supplies to the people of St Vincent and St Lucia.
