Investigators are awaiting the dental records of 29-year-old Devindra Siewdass, who was kidnapped last Thursday, as they suspect the skeletal remains found in Hindustan yesterday may be that of the missing courier. The request came as officers from the Anti Kidnapping Unit, Southern Homicide, Criminal Intelligence Unit along with Princes Town police discovered human remains that were burnt beyond recognition among a pile of tyres.
According to investigators, they received a tip-off that Siewdass’ body was dumped at Matiste Road and when the officers led by ASP Zamsheed Mohammed, ASP Yousuf Gaffar and Supt Kenneth Galindo combed the area around 5 am, they found the remains some 1500 metres into a forested area. Officers who spent the entire day at the scene said they were not able to positively identify the remains and will have to await forensic testing at the Forensic Science Centre, in St James today.
Three men and three women from the community were taken into police custody, however, one of the officers said it was for a possession of marijuana found at a house. Siewdass, of Rudy Avenue, LP#7 Siewdass Road, Freeport, is the son of Anirudh Siewdass, the owner of Rudy’s Variety Store located at Adam’s Bazaar in Chaguanas.
His kidnapping was the first of the year. Reports stated that around 6 pm Thursday, Siewdass, who worked at DHL Services at the Piarco International Airport, left home in his black Mitsubishi Libero station wagon. His family were unaware of where he went, but around 9 pm when his father called his phone someone else answered and said that if he wanted to see his son alive again, he must pay a ransom of $2 million.
A report was made to the AKU, CIU and Freeport police who found Siewdass’ car abandoned at Forres Park on Friday. The car was impounded and taken for fingerprint tests. Police did not say whether the ransom was paid. At the family’s home yesterday there were several people gathered but no one wanted to speak with the media.
