The Homicide Bureau says an arrest is imminent in the death of 31-year-old Barry Maloney, who was shot dead while buying vegetables at a stall off Chin Chin Road, Cunupia. The incident took place around 10.30 am yesterday. Maloney lived at both Coosal Road, off Madras Road, and Kernahan Road in Las Lomas. While talking to the vendor at the stall, he was approached by a gunman, who shot him several times before running away. Maloney collapsed and died on the scene.

Police mounted an aerial search for the suspect but he managed to escape. They said based on the description they received from eyewitnesses they were confident that they knew the identity of the killer and his arrest was imminent. Maloney, police said, had been arrested for many offences in the past, which included murder and larceny, and had recently been released from prison.

Insp Craig, Sgts Figaro and Tooleram and detectives of the Cunupia Police Station visited the scene and are continuing investigations. Maloney’s killing has pushed the murder toll to 104 for the year while for the same period last year there were 100 murders recorded.
