Police attached to the Belmont Police Station Operation Unit shot and killed a teenager during a shootout on Monday night. Nineteen-year-old Jeremy Innis, of Quarry Street, Laventille, and Bath Street, East Dry River, was standing with other people at Gloster Lodge, Gonzales, when shortly after 9 pm they were told to stop. Police say Innis fired at them when they approached. Police returned fire and Innis was shot. He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two officers, WPC Viarruel and Cpl Charles, were shot in the exchange and had to be treated for their injuries, police said. Viarruel was shot in the arm and her colleague was shot in the chest but luckily his bulletproof vest protected him from serious injuries, police said. The two officers were discharged from hospital. A 9mm pistol and 12 rounds of ammunition were found at the scene.

Interior designer shot dead

Homicide officers are investigating the latest murder which occurred in Laventille yesterday. Residents of Boxhill Trace heard several gunshots around 2.30 am but did not venture outside. About four hours later, when residents were on their way to work they found 34-year-old Nyron Vincent, alias Frank, dead at the side of the road. Police say he was not known to be involved in any illegal activity and relatives told them he was an interior designer.

They said his killing may have been a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
