The day after murdering his common-law wife Marilyn Murggan, Cepep worker Harold Ali died yesterday of poisoning at the San Fernando General Hospital. Police confirmed that 55-year-old Ali was pronounced dead around 5.15 am after drinking poison on Carnival Tuesday. Ali, originally of Roopsingh Road, Corial Village, Carapichaima, was found by passersby on the roadside at Gasparillo, two hours after strangling Murggan.
Ali and Murggan were involved in an argument over money at their Wyaby Road, Carapichaima home around 2 am. Police said Murggan’s daughters contacted their aunt Susan Sincere, telling her of the fight. When Sincere showed up at Murggan’s home around 6 am, she found her sister in the bathroom in a semi-conscious state with marks on her neck. Freeport police took her to the Couva District Health Facility, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
After fleeing the house, Ali contacted his children from a past marriage and told them what he had done. Gasparillo police, responding to reports of a body lying at Victoria Street, found Ali frothing from the mouth and unconscious. He was taken to the hospital where he remained under police guard until his death. Autopsies on both Murggan and Ali are expected to be done at the Forensic Science Centre in Port-of-Spain today.
