While thousands were enjoying the Carnival festivities on Monday and Tuesday, four families were plunged into mourning with the murders of four people in central and south-west Trinidad. Among those killed were 50-year-old mother Marilyn Murggan, labourer Shawn Marlon, Kwasi Lewis and 62-year-old Knolly Hudlin.

Carapichaima mother strangled over money
Police said Marilyn Murggan, a Cepep worker, was at her Wyady Street, Carapichaima, home around 2 am yesterday when she was involved in an argument with a male relative over money. Police reported that during the argument, the man began assaulting and strangling Murggan. Around 6 am, Murggan’s daughter awoke and discovered her mother’s body in the bathroom. By the time Freeport police led by PC Rajpat arrived, the suspect had already left the area.

Officers found Murggan in a semi-conscious state and took her to the Couva District Health Facility where she was pronounced dead on arrival. A manhunt was launched for the suspect. Police later found him frothing from the mouth at the roadside of Victoria Street, Gasparillo. He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was being treated for poisoning under police guard.

Man shot dead after beating ex-wife
A 25-year-old man is assisting police with investigations into the killing of Shawn Marlon Friday who was shot dead during a fight with his estranged wife. According to reports, Friday, a father of one, went to the woman’s Ramjohn Trace, Penal Rock Road, Penal, home around 4.45 pm, Monday and began beating her. It was when Friday pointed a gun at her face, the suspect intervened and was able to wrestle the weapon away. As the two continued to scuffle, Friday was shot in the chest and face.

PC Sookhoo and other officers from the Penal CID responded and found Friday already dead. His body was taken to the San Fernando Mortuary and will be transferred to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy.

Man killed over loud music
Police said Kwesi Lewis was stabbed to death after complaining about loud music being played near his New City Avenue home, Fyzabad. Reports stated that around 2 pm Monday, Lewis went to a neighbour’s home and complained about the loud music being played and returned home. Police said Lewis fell asleep in his car and around 3.35 pm, a man entered the car and stabbed him in the neck and chest. Lewis exited the car and collapsed on the roadway, where he died.

Court order fails to save elderly man
Despite obtaining a court order against a male relative, 62-year-old Knolly Hudlin was stabbed to death at his Penal home yesterday. According to reports, Hudlin and his wife had recently obtained a protective order, barring a male relative from coming to their home. However, around 2.30 pm, the relative breached the order and opposed Hudlin at the house. During an argument, the relative took up a knife and stabbed him several times about the body and ran away, police said.

Officers led by Supt Ramlal and Insp Granger visited the scene and Hudlin was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility where he died while undergoing treatment. Investigations are continuing.
